What To Do in the Event of a Breakdown

If your car breaks down on a smart motorway without a hard shoulder, try to move to the left lane with your hazard lights on and exit at the nearest junction, service station, or emergency refuge area (indicated by orange SOS signs). Use the emergency phone in the refuge area to contact help and provide as much information as possible to the operator.
Turn On Hazard Lights
Switch on your hazard lights immediately to warn other drivers that your vehicle is stationary.
Exit the Vehicle Safely
If you’re in a safe area, exit the vehicle as soon as you’ve stopped and have assessed your surroundings. Move to a secure location away from the road, ideally behind a guardrail or at a distance from traffic.
